In Mexico City, a Mesoamerican sculpture of a life-size decapitated ballgame player was found. It dates back to somewhere between 900-1100 CE. It is suspected that the statue was created beheaded in order to function as a pedestal for the heads of sacrificed players of the ancient game. Fragments of similar sculptures were found North of the site, and there are possibly a pair of similar sculptures in the west still to be explored.
There is a diversity of material used in the sculpture, ranging from shells, copper, ceramics and beads. The ceremonial site will be open to the public in 2012.
