Destroyed in early 2001 by the Taliban in an effort to eliminate everything un-islamic, the Buddah's of Bamiyan are now in the process of reconstruction. Bamiyan lost many tourists in the destruction of the giant 6th century statues, although war had driven most visitors away years before. Efforts to restore the large figures are in part an attempt to restore Bamiyan's tourism, which might give a tiny boost to the already poor economy.
