Robot Used to Explore Tunnels Beneath The Temple of Quetzalcoatl

CyArk is a non-profit organization whose mission is preserving cultural heritage sites through laser scanning, digital modeling, and other state-of-the-art technologies. On August 5, 2010, the organization announced that Mexican archaeologists discovered a tunnel forty feet below the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl. The tunnel is thought to be the most sacred element of the pyramid, and that rulers of Teotihuacán would be found at the end. The tunnel was explored with a small robot camera dubbed “Tlaloque 1”. This is the first time in Mexico that a robot has been integrated in an archaeological exploration, and only the second time in the world that a robot has been used in archaeological research. The images captured show us that the passageway is stable enough for archaeologists to explore soon.
