Hair Reveals Ancient Peruvians Were Stressed Out

A new study done on the ancient remains of Peruvians who lived between 550 A.D. and 1532, reveals high levels of the stress hormone, cortisol. This is the very first study to detect stress hormones in ancient hair. Cortisol is a hormones that is released in response to both real and perceived threats. Once it is released it travels all over the body and traces of it remain permanently. This discovery allows us to determine not only how people of ancient times behaved but possibly how they felt as well.
